Oranges and Lemons
Recorded at DIN Studios, Cable Street, London, May/June 2009.
Produced by Julian Simmons.
Mastered by Frank Arkwright at Metropolis.
Commissioned by Arts Council England and BBC London to mark the 150th anniversary of Big Ben chiming for the first time.
This composition features every bell in every church and institution mentioned in the longer version of Oranges and Lemons. 200 bells in 17 churches - 4000 individual bell strikes. All of the bells were individually recorded. Some hadn't been rung since VE Day.
The work also features a choir of people who live or work within earshot of one of the sets of bells and the children of Virginia School which sits underneath Shoreditch Church.
The composition received its live premier under the Great Bell of Bow at St Mary Le Bow Church at 7pm on Friday 10th July 2009. This performance featured the children of St Clement Danes School and was sponsored entirely by law firm, Stafford Young Jones, who work underneath the bells of St Martin. The premiere was conducted by Nathan Taylor.
The work was first broadcast in full by BBC London radio on 11th July. It was also featured on Radio 3's In Tune and on Radio 4's Today programme.
