The Black Cat was performed in the round, in an acting area of just a few metres, and lit entirely by candles.

The audience was brought into the theatre one by one, in complete darkness. Richard's performance was suitably grotesque, and some of the audience did nothing but scream throughout.

The terror was aided by the ensemble, who crept around in the shadows of the theatre, periodically brushing the necks of people who looked particularly engrossed in the Victorian gothic horror story.

The play became hugely popular on the campus, and many people were turned away on the last night.
